SHAME Donington missed their deadline then? :P
HOPES of the British Grand Prix being staged at Silverstone next year are expected to be handed a major boost today after Donington Park missed a final deadline in its bid to stage the race.
Simon Gillett, the owner of Donington Ventures Leisure Ltd, faces a make-or-break meeting this morning with Bernie Ecclestone which will determine the future of the showpiece event.
Ecclestone set Gillett a final deadline of last Friday to prove he had the funds to give the circuit a multi-million pound facelift required for the track to stage next year’s race but, as yet, no assurances have been given.
Rumours over the weekend suggested that the financial plug had been pulled by Gillett’s primary backers, leaving Ecclestone with no choice but to return the race to the Northamptonshire circuit.
On Friday the Formula One chief executive said: “This is the final deadline – 200 per cent. It’s not good is it? Even if they (Donington) come up with the money they can’t build the circuit in time.”
After arguably their most successful staging of the British Grand Prix for many years this summer, with a three-day crowd hitting 250,000, Silverstone would now appear to be in pole position to stage the race.
